Day Dreamin’ with Rye Rye

March 7th, 2009

ryerye_posterr

As you may have witnessed on “Shake it to the Ground,” the interplanetary hit that came from the voicebox of this cute little chick from Baltimore, Rye Rye can rap and dance her ass off. She was put on by DJ Blaqstarr, toured last year with M.I.A., and is soon releasing her first album on Interscope. All at the tender age of 17. She’s basically a female version of Souljah Boy except smart, funny, humble, and more talented. And she’s gonna be at Coda this Saturday for Bootyshots so don’t miss it.

She also came for a ride on the Jitney and told us a little bit about herself.

A review of Ultra Valentine

March 7th, 2009

ultra-valentine-mug

Homeboy Measures is on a humble mission to give you the lowdown on what you need to hear out there.

Today, it’s Montreal duo Ultra Valentine.

ULTRA VALENTINE is DJ/Producer Mayday and MC/Producer Vadah Boy. While these have been mainstays in Montreal’s electronic dance scene for the greater part of the decade, it’s a crime how hard they get slept on; Mayday is the best B-More/electro/party rocking DJ in Montreal right now (amongst a horde of chump ass clowns who have adopted this style but have no idea what they are doing) and Vadah fucking spits fire all day (when he’s in the mood of course!).

2009-1982: Back to the Future

March 7th, 2009

kanye-gmf1

Why are people gay-bashing Kanye? Don’t you remember what hip hop use to be like? Oh, that’s right, you don’t because you’ve never looked past your shit-covered goggles of post-96 rap stereotypes. This is how cats used to keep it fresh for people back in hip hop’s infancy. People need to let artists move in their own lane. If Kanye wants to rock crazy flamboyant gear and chill with guys who wear leotards, let it be. Nobody called Rick James gay back in his day, and you should see some of the stuff he was wearing. If Mobb Deep starts dressing like this, we can have a talk. But this is Kanye, so don’t act surprised.
Up there is a picture of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, hip hop pioneers and crafters of “The Message,” one of the most important rap songs ever made.
Look closely at both pictures. Just proving my point…

It culminated in a closing party during Nuit Blanche and now the exhibit is open until March 20. Here’s is a series of photos by Jason Botkin that cover the evolution of this project.

Enjoy and go see for yourself, you won’t regret it.

A Q&A with the Red Bull 3Style suspects

February 26th, 2009

013009_3style_poster_montreal-fr-600px5

Here’s a Q&A with the lucky fellas battling it out this weekend at the Red Bull 3Style Competition. Each DJ will be given 15 minutes to prove he’s the most versatile and will have the chance to battle it out in Toronto on March 12th with some of the country’s best. The only rule is: you must play 3 styles.

So what did we find out about DJs? They’re kinda nerds. Just kiddin’…not really. These guys are cool.

Saturday night. Telus Theatre. Be there at 9.

Blu is from LA and he’s is really nice with soul and jazz samples.

Smoke Session with Gorilla Zoe

February 26th, 2009

gorillazoe

Midnight Jitney caught up with Gorilla Zoe during the Montreal stop of Weezy’s I Am Music tour. We talked over a fat blunt and got to know Zoe a little better. Good dude.

On his single “Lost”:

“After going around the nation and different places in the world, I realized there’s a bigger picture. It’s not just regular music. You gotta reach out if you want somebody to feel it. This song, you feel it because everybody is lost in their own world at some point and time. I don’t know what you’re situation is but I know you got some shit goin’ on because everybody do.”
